Background-information Friday
Protests this Friday are dedicated to the children of the uprising, as we grieve the deaths of over 72 children killed by security forces and are angered by the number of children that have been detained and abused.
This week at least 7 children died at the hands of the security forces. Hajar Tayser Al Khateb, 10 years old, died on Sunday when her school bus was hit by a shell in Homs. Ibrahim Mahmoud Rasho, 12 years old, was killed in Moart Shoreen village in Idlib last Friday. Marwa Hasan Shakhdo, 4 years old, was shot by security forces in her home in Rastan, Homs on Wednesday. Malak Muneer Kadah, Mahmoud Izaldin and two children of Khadidja Al Kurdi were killed this week. Shocked by graphic video footage, people around the world are demanding justice for the torture and killing of Hamza al Khateeb. Children in several towns protested in solidarity with Hamza this week.
In a very violent week, 100 civilians were killed by security forces since Friday.
Army and security terrorize Homs: Throughout the week, Rastan and Talbeseh were heavily targeted by the army and security. Eyewitnesses described heavy shelling by tanks and sniper fire. The army and security forces destroyed homes, shelled mosques, damaged businesses, security conducted mass arrests and over 80 civilians were killed.
Early reports of armed civilians were confirmed to be incorrect, and the Rastan local coordinating committee released a statement explaining that one army unit had refused to fire on civilians and were then fired upon by another unit. The LCC in Rastan reiterated their commitment to non-violent resistance.
Civilians were also targeted this week in Nawa (Daraa), Teir Maleh (Homs), Al Hirak (Daraa), Da’el and Banyas.
Evening protests last night in Lattakia, Al Qadam, Homs, Hama, Hujeira, Sett Zeinab, Jisr Al Shoghour and several other places.
Heavy security presence in Lattakia last night: Reinforcements of security troops in Al-Raml Al-Falastini, 7 new barriers, reinforcements close to the chalets. It was reported that the airforce hovered over the area for a period of time.
